Millen Family update
Posted on Sun, Apr 27 2008 Dear Friends and Family,
Well, I always seem to start this way but … I am so sorry that I haven’t written before now. Where does the time go?!
Thank you for your continued interest and prayers for the ministry we are engaged in during this season of our lives. God has been good. Let me give you a few details.
For the last year and half, I have been working with campus ministers in the northeast United States , seeking to serve them and the students that they minister to on a weekly basis. Primarily, this has been through providing missionary speakers on campus for their weekly meetings to challenge their students wit h what God is doing in the world through Bible Translation. We have shared with Campus Crusade for Christ, InterVarsity, and DiscipleMakers, among others.
Before beginning this ministry, I was told that I should not set my sights too high because campus ministers might not be very interested in “sharing their pulpit” with outsiders. My consolation was that I had a region that covered a 200 mile radius from our home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This region includes New York City , Philadelphia , Pittsburgh , Baltimore, Washington DC and everyw here in between! I believed that certainly there had to be SOME ministries interested in hearing about the world of missions! Well, God gave us favor, and there was very little resistance to the idea. In fact, most campus ministers were excited about the possibility of having their students hear about missions from someone who has “been there – done that.” The struggle became how to schedule all of the possible meetings. It became clear that I would not be able to do all of the speaking, nor did I even want to. My desire was to put a veteran missionary (someone who had given decades to the task) in front of the students so that they could hear all of what God had done. The size of the group didn’t matter – what we wanted was a ministry interested in hearing what God is up to, and interested in hearing how Bible translation is critical to the task of reaching the nations for Christ. All in all, I would guess that we were able to challenge nearly 3,000 students to walk with God, and to join Him in the greatest task – bringing the Good News of Christ to the hardest places in the world. Only God knows who He will call out to actually GO as missionaries, but we have gotten word of a number of students from these meetings who are going to serve Him on short term trips this summer. We also collected a bunch of names of students that wanted to find out more about serving with Wycliffe. Another hope of mine is that if God is calling them to STAY, then they will still be full partners in mission by praying for, encouraging and sending others.
One unexpected blessing that came as a result of these campus meetings has been the opportunity to serve as a guest speaker during a Campus Crusade for Christ weekend retreat (U. Penn) and also at the CCC Middle Atlantic Christmas Conference in D.C. The latter gave me the opportunity to challenge 500 men on issues of moral purity.
Please pray:
One final note: Please be in prayer for us – we have been sensing for some time now that God is preparing us to return to Africa. We are pursuing a very promising opportunity, but there are a number of items to work through. Please pray for wisdom and guidance in decision making. We will give more information in the near future.
Thank you again for your love and prayers for us. We COULD NOT do this without you! J
In Christ,
Alec & Tammy Millen
